The Mental Assistance Department was founded by Ipiprix, alongside Bart Montgomery and Enrique Graves. Taking the guise of a medical practice in which therapy take place, its real purpose is to actually find a cure for human mortality through experiments. Many attempts fail, but this doesn't stop the doctors from continuing their search for the ultimate cure no matter what, even if it means ending up in madness.
Biography
The Beginning
The Mental Assistance Department begins with Dr. Ipiprix, a man very interested in immortality and its potential. He became a doctor after graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in medicine and met Bart_Montgomery and later Enrique_Graves, who were also interested in the idea of immortality. Together, they founded the Mental Assistance Department, a medical building based on psychology and supposedly providing therapy to patients, which is actually a cover for the Mortality Advancement Division, where many experiments are done to find a potential cure for mortality. Numerous attempts have been made, all of them unsuccessful.
The first three cures (made by Ipiprix alone at the time) didn't work. Some time after, Ipiprix would meet Dr. Bart Montgomery, who was researching immortal creatures. It is when Bart discovers the location of immortal beings called Nephilim, which caught the eye of Ipiprix, who assumed this would be critical in curing morality. Ipiprix prepares an expedition to the desert, in which he meets Dr. Enrique Graves, invited by Bart. The three doctors will find the last Nephilim, Immortius, and decides to take his eye, convinced that the secret of his immortality resides in his blood. This leads to Cure #4, which is unsuccessful, causing the patient to burn after ingestion. Later, Ipiprix discovers the location of an island in the middle of the sea after investigating rumors of an immortal man living there. However, all questions to the man, named Krilessh, proved to be completely fruitless, as he was unable to speak without being confused or illogical, his mind having been highly damaged by whatever made him immortal. With the source of his immortality unknown, Cure #28 was a failure. After many more attempts, Cure #43, named "The Stoneman Potion" was (presumably) created by Bart. This cure was also a failure: despite giving the patient abilities such as having a strong physique by turning their skin to stone and walking through walls, the effects were slowly turning them into brain dead creatures. It would have to take someone with a strong mind to overcome the cure's side effects.
Still searching for a cure, Ipiprix went to the Mountains of Madness, or Source, where he discovered creatures called Mindwalkers. These robotic, spider-like entities have the ability to extract happy moments from a person's memories, and store them forever in the form of a colored liquid to eat. This ability particularly greatly interested Ipiprix, as keeping a person's memories forever is considered a form of immortality. However, Ipiprix is attacked by a Mindwalker during his visit, with his happy memories being extracted and killing Ipiprix. Despite his death, the Mindwalker that attacked Ipiprix inserts a Mindwalker into his dead body, pretending to be human in order to extract more memories to feed on. The Mindwalker controlling Ipiprix brings Mindwalkers to the Mortality Advancement Division to feed on more victims, under the act of testing the Mindwalkers to see if their memory-extracting abilities were an efficient cure. From these experiments, Cure#49 is created.
Cure #49 & The Death of The Doctors
The Mindwalker's abilities was tested was true_faces, or Drew, who seeked help from Graves after his girlfriend, Esmeralda, died in a car accident that Drew blames himself for. The doctors introduced him to the tests of Cure #49, claiming the treatment would make him feel better. However, its reveal that the cure isn't effecient and has many side effects. When Drew had his memories extracted with a Mindwalker, his mind was split in two. His memory of Esmeralda was removed and stored, leaving the dull part in the patient, who becomes a "shell". true_faces is temporarily happy after the experiment, but his mood crashes, becoming incredibly depressed. Forgetting who his girlfriend was, he became incredibly confused and stressed trying to figure out who it was he loved so much. The side-effects are seen by thr player in You Look Happy. This alarmed Bart, one of the doctors, who recommended Cure #49 to be discontinued. Ipiprix, being controlled by the Mindwalker, would kill him, and claim that Bart had gone on vacation to Australia.
After Bart's "vacation" and seeing Ipiprix's strange behavior, Dr. Graves becomes increasingly worried and doubtful with Ipiprix and his behavior. He decides to go to the Mountains of Madness to figure out what happened to him, knowing he's been different ever since his visit there. He steals Ipiprix's car to go there, hoping to find out what changed him as well as trying to figure out the source of all of the madness. However, after finding the source of everything, which was the Mindwalkers, Graves was killed by one of them.
Shortly after these events, an incident occurred where an someone was caught investigating the "holiday" of Dr. Montgomery. This person was Cecil_Montgomery, son of Dr. Montgomery himself. He was exploring the Mortality Advancement Division when he was attacked by patients of Cure #43. Cornered, he drank a vial of Cure #43 himself, making him stronger, more durable, and letting him escape by walking through a stone wall. He's able to retain his sanity because Cecil is strong-minded enough to counteract the side effect.
Introduction of The Player
Later, the player finds the department, gradually discovering the events that took place there. They find objects called Memory Cubes, physical(?) manifestations of the minds of the lost memories of the people that have been victims to Mindwalkers. These cubes will be found in their respective games.
The red cube belonging to Dr. Ipiprix is at the bottom of Mortality Advancement Division. The green cube, Drew's, is at the end of You Look Happy, The yellow cube representing Dr. Montgomery is found in Rejection, which the player accesses by drinking Bart's vial of Cure#49. Finally the blue cube, Dr. Graves', is found in SOURCE next to his corpse. After acquiring the four cubes, The player undergoes the mindwalker procedure, yet survives due to the memory cubes "anchoring" the player. Somehow, through this process, the player discovers what happened to Ipiprix, and how he was killed by the Mindwalkers.
After discovering the truth, the player returns to the department and accesses the Eye of Immortius, which leads them to In Ruina Eius De Nephilim to return the Eye to its owner: Immortius. He had been chained for millennia due to being manipulated by the Mindwalkers to kill the rest of his species. Returning the eye grants him his strength again, as well as a strong desire for revenge against those who manipulated him. He breaks free from his chains, taking the player with him to an island in the middle of the ocean: Castaway. Here lies the Tower of the Liars, an underwater base where the Mindwalkers experimented for a long time in order to find a species susceptible to their mind control. Krilessh underwent the experiments, which granted him immortality at the cost of his sanity. After getting out of the base, the player meets Cecil for the first time, alongside Drew, Krileesh, and Immortius. They all want to stop the Mindwalkers from extracting everyone's memories on earth, with some having other, more personal reasons for the Mindwalker's destruction.
Finale
The group arrives at Jalcrl Nwm, where a large part of the Mindwalkers are located, as well as the leader, Dr. Ipiprix.
Most of the group moves forward, leaving the Player behind. Moving forward, you can find Drew, who’s been attacked by a Mindwalker. Unable to get up, he lends you a shotgun he names Esmeralda, named after the love of his life he can finally remember.
After solving a few puzzles and killing a few Mindwalkers themselves with the shotgun, the Player finds Cecil and an exhausted Immortius, ending up in a final room.
In this room, Cecil urges you to push a red button, as he himself can’t due to the effects of Cure #43 finally catching up to him. However, Dr. Ipiprix claims to have finally, but briefly overcame the effects of the Mindwalkers, and urges you to push the green button.
Depending on your choice, you can either experience a grand, final fight with Mindwalker Prime with the help of Krileesh, or distribute Cure #50 and destroy Earth.
In the case that you fight and defeat Mindwalker Prime, the Mindwalkers become desperate and initiate a self-destruct of the arctic base. In a hurried escape, you can power a convient portal and make your way to a peaceful beach.
This place houses everyone along the journey, even the dead people who are ghosts. Krileesh swims happily with Shelly, Immortius relaxes before saying he has other journeys to be on, Drew and Esmeralda relax on a dock, Dr. Graves comforts a shameful Ipiprix, and Cecil takes time to recollect while the ghost of Dr. Montgomery sits with him.
After the threat of the Mindwalkers is gone, Cecil then inherits the department and transitions the building from doing “therapy” to studying the stars by creating a new Astronomy Division dedicated to studying the stars.
The Astronomy Division recieves foreign distress signals from far away. Decoding this leads to the location of the Traveler's Sanctuary.
